Volunteer Spotlight: Leah C

Meet Leah! Leah has been the Conversation Class Facilitator in the evening online class since July 2022. Cari, Coordinator of the class had this to say about Leah’s service. “Leah not only helps with lesson plans, she coordinates volunteers, and mentors students. While others are only able to commit to a short time, Leah has committed over a year leading the Conversation Class. On top of Leah's reliability, she has been a joy to work with. I can always count on her whether that is to communicate with volunteers, call students, or to navigate students’ needs. I greatly appreciate all the work Leah does supporting our students.”

Thank you so much Leah, we appreciate all your commitment and dedication to the class. Read on to find out about Leah and how she came to Literacy Source:

  1. Where are you originally from? If you’re not from Seattle what brought you here?

I'm not! I'm from all over the place. I've lived in Wilmington, DE, Chattanooga, TN, Dalton, GA, and Nagano, Japan. I moved here in 2015 from Greenville, SC after falling in love with the city while visiting my best friend the previous year.

  2. Please share something of your life so far and what you would like to do in the future.

One of the places I lived before Seattle was Japan, where I taught ESL in elementary and middle schools for 3 years. It was an incredible experience both to teach and to see more of the world. When I think of my future, I imagine more of the same - mind opening experiences and exploring the world.

  3. Why did you choose to volunteer at LS?

I love teaching ESL! When I moved here, I didn't initially have time for volunteering, but once my job became remote in 2020, I finally had the flexibility to get back into it.

  4. What do you like about volunteering at LS?

It's a fun and diverse environment full of fantastic teachers and interesting and impressive students from all over the world.

  5. Any stories or highlights from volunteering at LS?

It was so lovely to finally be able to meet everyone in person at the potluck over the summer! I started volunteering in 2022, and it was the first time I'd seen any of my coordinators or students in person! It was so fun to try everyone's amazing dishes and meet some of my amazing students.

  6. What might people not know about you?

I'm a pretty open book, so I think all my students know just about everything there is to know (including of course my love for crochet and my dogs), but my secret favorite activity is singing, and in particular going to karaoke.
