Originally from Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, Birikiti moved to the U.S. in 1994. Birikiti and her family were briefly settled in Chicago but then moved to Seattle and have been here ever since.
In Eritrea, Birikiti helped her father run a farm. They grew barley and millet and raised cows, camels, sheep, and donkeys. The farm also produced dairy products like yogurt and sour cream. When Birikiti got married, she and her husband moved to Sudan for four years until her husband was accepted into the U.S. refugee resettlement program.
Birikiti has four children. The youngest is in middle school and the others are in college. Birikiti is proud to share that her daughter is graduating from UW Bothell in June, and she hopes to do social work as a profession. Birikiti currently works in homecare while also attending the Ready to Work North class four days a week! She is a very busy but dedicated student. In the future, Birikiti wishes to own a childcare or family home business.
Keep up the great work, Birikiti!
