AmeriCorps Adult Basic Education Instructor

This is an AmeriCorps position and will be part of our instructional team working out of our Learning Center in the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle. AmeriCorps positions are full-time for 10.5 months (September 1, 2019 – July 15, 2020).

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach classes focusing on literacy, English language, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), basic life skills, digital literacy, workforce skills, and citizenship

  • Manage a caseload of students, conduct intake interviews and on-going testing, help students establish a learning plan and class schedule, and connect students with learning opportunities to make progress in achieving their literacy and life skills goals

  • Match students with individual tutors

  • Provide direct lesson planning and instructional support to volunteer tutors

  • Conduct outreach to increase community awareness of Literacy Source programs

  • Coordinate and produce a monthly student newsletter and regular center-wide class announcements

  • Develop and help volunteers implement supported computer lab time for students to improve digital literacy skills and access to online learning opportunities 

  • Plan for and provide one-to-one volunteer tutoring supervision for 5-10 students through traditional tutoring or distance learning 

Required Qualifications:

AmeriCorps members must be at least 18 years of age, US citizens or have permanent resident status, and be able to commit to full time service for 10.5 months from September 1, 2019 – July 15, 2020. Applicants must have:

  • Interest in working with refugees and immigrants 

  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and appreciation for working with diverse groups

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated competence in interpersonal relationships

  • Strong organizational skills – ability to use initiative, work both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekends

Desired Qualifications:

  • A degree in TESOL, Education, Social Work, or a related field 

  • Previous experience teaching basic skills to adults

  • Bi-lingual 

  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment with immigrant adults

  • Strong computer skills - proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Documents

Compensation & Hours:

AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $1,307 per month from the Washington Service Corps. AmeriCorps members also receive:
