Family Literacy

“Adult education prepares parents to be their child’s first and most important teacher. A mother's reading skill is the greatest determinant of her children’s future academic success, outweighing other factors, such as neighborhood and family income.” (National Institutes of Health, 2010)

Literacy Source knows that helping parents develop their own skills allows them to best play this important role in their child’s life. We know that when we educate parents, we are helping not only the parents become more self-sufficient, but are creating a ripple effect in the family, school, and community.

Literacy Source partners with high-need Seattle Public elementary schools to provide on-site ESOL classes for parents. In 2017-18, we are offering classes in four schools, including Northgate, Olympic Hills, MLK, and Van Asselt Elementary. Each class runs twice weekly at the host school, and provides childcare for younger siblings to eliminate the barrier that so many parents face when they want to take English classes.
