Citizenship Announcements

USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) will begin using a new version of the citizenship test in 2008-09.  Much work has been put into the redesigning of this test, which you can read about here.

Literacy Source is working with students and volunteers to make sure they have appropriate study materials as they prepare for the new test.  The reading vocabulary, writing vocabulary, and history and government questions distributed by USCIS can be found in the attached links.

While this new version of the interview tests a broader range of history and government knowledge. A pilot of the new test had a 92% pass rate (although participants were self-selected).  USCIS has made available Scoring Guidelines to ensure that applicants are scored consistently in their interviews:

Who will take this new test?  According to USCIS and CLINIC (Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc.), all citizenship applicants who file their citizenship applications before October 1, 2008 have a choice; they may take the current test or the new test.  Those who apply after October 1, 2008 will take the new version of the test.  Beginning on October 1, 2009, everyone will take the new test, regardless of when they filed.

If you have questions about the new test, the material, or the implementation, please contact citizenship@literacysource.org.
